Deltoid muscle pain

Deltoid muscle pain?

The deltoid is the round shoulder muscle that attaches the collar bone and shoulder blade to the humerus bone in the arm. There are three parts to the deltoid — the anterior, middle and the posterior. Deltoid strain is common in athletes and people doing heavy lifting work and can be painful. A mild strain will feel like a tightness in the muscle but will have very little swelling, whereas a more severe case will swell considerably. If the strain is severe, you will need to see a doctor, but there are several steps you can take to help the condition.

Diagnose and relief your pain:

1.Test your shoulder by lifting your arm from the side up sideways and from the side out backward against resistance. If you feel a stab of pain, it is likely you have a deltoid strain.

2.Soak a cloth in cold water and wrap around ice. Apply to the affected area for 15-minute periods. Continue to do this for 24 hours.

3.Use a heat pad on the affected area. Once again, do this for 15-minute periods for 24 hours. Alternate this with the ice treatment.

4.Lightly stretch the muscle and see if you can detect whether the pain has gotten worse.

5.If you're still in pain, make an appointment to see a doctor or sports injury specialist. A specialist will be able to use massage, ultrasound and electrical stimulation to help your condition.

Self Treatment:

Apply an ice pack for 15 minutes at a time for the first 24 hours. If it is not too painful, stretch the back of the shoulder.
